Oral history interview with Werner Ryser [sound recording], 1998.

Werner Ryser, a Blanchardsville, Wis. native, discusses his Korean War service in the army as a medical corpsman who served with the 160th Medical Company attached to the 40th Division. He talks about adjustment to military routine, basic and infantry training at Camp Picken (Virginia), further medical training at Fort Sam Houston (Texas) which was already treating Korean War casualties, and transfer to Inchon (Korea). Joining the 40th Infantry at the 38th Parallel, he touches upon the dangers of eating local food, replacement troops, and working with Republic of Korea troops. Ryser comments on the actions of a medic once a soldier yelled "medic," field treatment, and the common medical problems among troops. Transferred to guard a prisoner of war camp at Koje, he comments on the differences between Korean and Chinese prisoners. Ryser mentions his unit's combat during the battle of Heartbreak Ridge and Old Baldy, the differences between the television program MASH and actual combat, and his return to the United States.
